Bike to Work
January 15, 2007
It has been a month now since I decided to cut loose and try to go to work by bike. Here’s the background: I love to bike, But the last time I ride a bicycle was back in senior high. The reason was simple, I don’t have time. Workloads at school and some other hobbies occupy my mind to try to ride a bike again. The bike was in the attic all those years.
So now, we back in present year. The “Bike to Work” movements suddenly emerge in the early 2005. It contaminates many urban city workers. Especially those who commute. Including in my own office
Started with Mas Ari from the production division. He arrived at the office one morning, wearing a bicycle jersey and make quite impression to the other guys. After a brief Q&A session, his testimonial changes some of the guys way of thinking regarding the transports to work. Then my friend Dodi started to ride a bike to work. Until October 2006, 4 guys at the office have decided to go to work in a bike.
Me? No, at first I have yet gone undecided. Though the guys were pushing me day to day, forcing me to use a bike instead of mass transport (In this case using an “Angkot”). The reason? I guess it was concerning my hectic job. I don’t have the time to taking care a bike anymore. I once think that it would take some time and some effort to maintain a bike. Well this is true in certain (positive) way.
One crowded morning; I went to the office using the usual transport (that’s the Angkot if you miss me from before). It was 10 minutes before I was declared late, yet I’m stuck at this miserable traffic jam. That’s when I decided, “OK! That’s it I can’t take this anymore!” After I arrived at the office, I started to ask guidance to the guys. They happily accept my decision with open arms (I guess they think their poison has succeeded to sting me too).
So, that weekend I brought down my old dad bikes from the attic and brought it to a bicycle shop to reset that bike. I’m officially went “bike to work” that very Monday.
Usually, I went to work at six in the morning. It only took about 50 minutes (if I go slow) to arrive at the office. It’s not as far as some people think; the distance is around 10 – 12 kilometers (I don’t know the exact distance for I don’t have the tool to measure it yet)
Now, after one Bike To Work gathering, one Fun Bike invitation, one Culinary Tour, a couple of million rupiahs spend to bought a new bike (yeah, again those guys have succeeded to persuade me to buy a new state-of-the-art bike), I have officially back to my old hobby, ride a bike. But not only that, I ride a bike…to work!!
So, you’ll find a new category in my blog regarding this new old hobby of mine.
Oh yeah, here are a couple of photos of my new bike. Look cool isn’t it?

- # - And so begin the brick wars! On the axis side, it's Steve Jobs and its Apple. The Allied side consists of peoples who unlocked their iPhone. But nooo, they're not the only ones. According to Scoble, some regular iPhone user has the same problem too after the update that Apple released. It's getting hotter now. :) - #
