Motorcycle and the Traffic in Jakarta
January 24, 2007
I might be wrong, but here’s the visualization in my brain when it comes to road user hierarchy:
Higher level will result in high priorities over the road. That’s my ideal thinking. Truck has to prioritize Cars. A car has to prioritize Motorcycle and so on.
In my opinion, this level of priviliges on the other hand has a very strong effect regarding road accidents. I’ve always told my friends, in the case of motorcycle versus car in some road crash
In the case of Truck versus Pedestrians, I don’t have to tell the outcome anymore. The truck would always be the guilty parties. Well, at least that’s how I see it. Don’t know about you all.
Regarding to this, there’s a new law here in Jakarta, which prohibited motorcycle to roam free in some of the specific roads (the one that they called “protocol road”). This, of course ignited some controversies to all sides. The local government of Jakarta thinks that this rule will lessen the traffic in Jakarta.
I totally disagree with that statement above. Yes, the excessive use of motorcycle in Jakarta is very concerning (you can buy a motorcycle with no down payment at all). However, was it the only culprit of making Jakarta’s traffic worse?
Let us not forget that the transaction of private car is very high too. I don’t blame them to buy their own car if they want too. But, why buy a car if you can ride a mass transportation? The answer? the mass transportation in here is a joke. Your won’t find a good cheap transport solution when your traveling in Jakarta.Nevertheless, in my opinion the number one factor of traffic jam here is disciplinary. You don’t see much of that in here. When you use a vehicle in Jakarta, you’re in the jungle with its own jungle law.
Though I against that new law the government makes, I still simply hate motorcycle. They commit too much crime here. They are the ultimate entity regarding to in disciplinary. When you said reckless driver in Jakarta, well the first think that comes in my mind are motorcyclist.
Now, with the mindset that maybe similar to what I show you above, they struck back and somewhat ranting about the problems with cars and related it to their own “poor” miserable fate. That e-mail wasn’t fit to a healthy brain of mind. Its argument was so weak that it can be confront quite easily.
But I’m tired of this; I don’t want to rant no more. Now, I’m here:
I am between them motorcycle and the pedestrian now. In that level, I have taken enough of their arrogant stupid driving method. I can only deep breathe and try to relax a bit. As a bicycle user, I’m driving a similarly vehicle (but I use my knee as the engine). But, in contrary, I will not drive like them in the road. I will obey rules that made up in the road. This is because I know that agonizing feeling when you see a motorcyclist roaming free as if they own the streets and care about nothing else.
Dear God, please forgive them, direct them to the true path of righteousness.

- # - And so begin the brick wars! On the axis side, it's Steve Jobs and its Apple. The Allied side consists of peoples who unlocked their iPhone. But nooo, they're not the only ones. According to Scoble, some regular iPhone user has the same problem too after the update that Apple released. It's getting hotter now. :) - #

@rifie: memang! terkadang di trotoar pun gak aman, saya pernah tuh lagi jalan kaki di trotoar eh malah di klaxonin sama motor di belakang saya, dia malah teriak “eh! kalo jalan cepetan dong ye, jangan kayak siput!” denger gitu, saya langsung jalan makin pelan…. :)
@Tukangroti: Welcome to the club! :)
