Ubuntu Problems in Virtual PC 2007
May 15, 2007
Yesterday, Dodi need help from me about a problem. He wants to install Ubuntu inside his Vista using Virtual PC. This is for an article that he wants to write about Virtual PC. Okay, we know that in order to install Ubuntu we must first use the Live CD then choose the installation process. The problem occurred whenever we went to graphic modes. The display would go fuzzy, garbled and unusable.
Therefore, he went googling for an answer and found out a small workaround to solve this issue:
- Switch to a console via ctrl-alt-f1
- Login with user/pass
- Run “sudo sed -i “/DefaultDepth/ s/24/16/” /etc/X11/xorg.conf” and then reboot.
(via zdNet Blog)
Then I help him with this, (Because he didn’t want to touch console-based stuff). The problem solved, so I leave him, because I have to go somewhere else. That evening I came back again to found out that he cancelled the experiment. “What’s the problem?,” I asked. It seems that Ubuntu has problem with mouse recognition using VirtualPC. And with some googling, he found out that as of today this problem had not been resolved yet. (though there is a workaroud where you can use the keyboard as a mouse)
This is the fundamental problem with Linux in general. I know that Linux is a best solution for me. But not for everybody, at least not for now. Though it is more user-friendly nowadays, but when it comes to bug, you need a little bit effort to find a workaround yet a solution. The kind of effort that do not reside in every average users. This eternal problem would always creep in Linux. No matter how friendly it becomes.
I don’t know, is it just me and my pessimistic aspect of Linux or is this the reality of Linux after all this year?
So why am I that bummed out? it’s because I’m planning to use Virtual PC as a testbed for Ubuntu and other distros that I got. I want an alternative for VMware.

www.patvandiest.com- I definitely will go to Pesta Blogger 2007. I've register there this afternoon, hope they approved my application. Will go with Rifie. It would be fun!
- # - And so begin the brick wars! On the axis side, it's Steve Jobs and its Apple. The Allied side consists of peoples who unlocked their iPhone. But nooo, they're not the only ones. According to Scoble, some regular iPhone user has the same problem too after the update that Apple released. It's getting hotter now. :) - #
- Remember Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange"? here's behind-the-scenes footage to relive that legendary movie (via Bedazzled)
- # - Ouh yes! know I now the first item in my "to-be-bought" list for Dody when he goes to Singapore next month. The new Dashboard Confessional album "The Shade of Poison Trees" (release date: October 2nd). Yaay!
- # - So I got bored (again) with the last theme. I had to change it, but not much though. So, here it is in it's full glory. - #

It’s almost always a pain installing Linux in VirtualPC. Conspiracy theorists would be quick to suspect something, and after experiencing much trouble myself, I’m very much ready to side with them.
I’ve had so much pain with Microsoft products so far — single IE bug stopping the show for an important corporate application, Active directory bug destroying the whole tree, IE bugs (read: features) destroying my designers layouts (argh), various http://annoyances.org, embrace & extend tactics on LDAP / DNS / kerberos / web standards / etc.
I was an MCSA, but Microsoft products has made my life harder and my systems hard to interoperable with each other.
Especially in huge, diverse corporate settings.
Unless that huge, diverse corporate setting is a 100% Microsoft shop, of course.
The switch has flipped for me sometime ago :)

#sufehmi: Hi there, yes Microsoft products have their own, let’s say… bizzare ethics…
But the mindsets of people especially in Indonesia are still biased towards them. Though there is this emerging “Open Source” warriors out there, but the numbers are still a bit small as far as I can say. The technicality of linux scares the hell out of those Joe (or Jane) average user. Yet Ubuntu helps, yes, Ubuntu help a LOT. Now this could be the arsenal for us to promote linux more harder.
#imtheface: Virtualbox? kewl!! downloading now….

Just thought I’d let everyone know there’s now an unsupported fix that will get the mouse working with Ubuntu 7.04 and Virtual PC 2007. I wrote up some basic instructions at http://shrinkster.com/p53.
By the way, in this case the problem was not with VPC, but instead the Linux kernal. And it not only affected Ubuntu but several other distros as well.
There was a bug that prevented Linux from recognizing any PS/2 style mouse running on an SIS chipset, which is exactly what VPC happens to emulate. Patches were released to the Linux kernal that seemed to fix the issue for real PS/2 mice, but unfortunately not the one emulated in VPC. I heard the problem also existed in VMWare, although I hadn’t tried it personally.
So in this case it wasn’t Microsoft with the issue, but Linux. Whoops.

mouse solution :
“On the Ubuntu boot menu, select Start or install Ubuntu and hit F6. Add i8042.noloop to the end of the line, and press Enter. This will make the mouse work in recent versions of the kernel.”
